The Space at Sway

A Community Art Space

The Space at Sway Downtown is a community art space inside a yoga and dance studio featuring works from local and national contemporary artists.  The historic building with exposed brick wall adds something special to this downtown gallery.

We rotate shows monthly with an opening reception at LoDa Artwalk, held on the second Friday of each month.

This Month’s Show

Our Southern Souls by Lynn Henderson Oldshue

Opening Reception: Friday, Nov 8th from 6pm-9pm

Lynn shares the stories of everyday people in South Alabama. Come see the faces and stories of those who live among us.

Lynn Oldshue started The Southern Rambler magazine six years ago to tell the stories of artists and musicians on the Gulf Coast. A story about the people in Mobile who take the bus for hours every day to get to minimum wage jobs, school, medical appointments and grocery shopping, changed her direction. She started Our Southern Souls in December 2015 to give a voice to the voiceless. More than 1,400 Souls stories include people who survive cancer, car wrecks, and sexual abuse. People who flee from war and persecution, take care of spouses with Alzheimer’s, and follow their dreams. People who rise up from food stamps, go on road trips, and read poetry to please a spouse. She has interviewed victims of floods, fires, hurricanes, parents grieving over the shooting death of a child, and nomads living in caves in Morocco. Her stories and pictures from Havana, Cuba hung on the walls of the Alabama Contemporary Art Center in their “Sister Shores” exhibit. She recently wrote the “Sexual Slavery in South Alabama” series in Lagniappe about sex trafficking in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Her “From Hell to Hope” series about domestic won first place in Feature Writing from the Alabama Press Association.

She also started Faces of Mobile to show the beauty of diversity in the faces of downtown Mobile. She believes that stories and photographs still matter, show our humanity, and help us understand how much we have in common.

The Space at Sway is Available for Private Rentals
